Human Capital Business Solutions Ltd is a Boutique HR Advisory Firm that specializes in strategic HR Consulting, Talent Acquisition & Development, Risk Management and Business Process Outsourced Services with our Headquarters based in Uganda and Country Office in Tanzania.

On behalf of our client in the Manufacturing Sector we are looking for a competent and experienced Maintenance and Engineering Manager to be based in Kampala, Uganda

Position overview

The Maintenance & Engineering Manager oversees the maintenance of all factory machinery (compressed air system, heat reclaimer, boiler, HVAC, water softener, electrical systems, etc). He/She is also responsible for overseeing highly diversified duties of installation, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance and monitoring facility equipment used in accordance with safety, predictive, and productive maintenance systems and processes to support the achievement of the company’s business goals and objectives. He/She manages a team of maintenance mechanics and utilize proper skilled techniques to ensure the safe, efficient operation of all company machinery.

Reports To:  Plant Manager   

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare an Annual Engineering Operating Budget aligned with the strategic business plan.
  • Develop departmental annual OPEX & CAPEX plans.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance plans are in place, generate annual maintenance schedule for plant machinery, and ensure compliance.
  • Liaise with machine suppliers to generate critical spare lists. Order necessary parts, tools, equipment, etc. promptly by following company policies.
  • Manage & maintain departmental costs within agreed targets.
  • Maximize production volumes of machines through reduction of breakdowns to meet production targets.
  • Roll out preventive maintenance programs by carrying out periodical checks in all machines to ensure optimal working condition.
  • Standardize processes through the development of SOPs, work instructions and other relevant documents.
  • Maintain a complement of critical spares on the shelf for plant equipment and maintain parts inventory (quantity and value matches with the records).
  • Identify plant key risk areas and follow-up for closure.
  • Come up with modifications and machine improvements (focused improvements) based on equipment history.
  • Supervise the maintenance / Repair or replace equipment when necessary and perform basic plumbing, mechanical, and electrical and building repair work when necessary.
  • Perform root cause analysis for any abnormal conditions/ failures; take required corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence of such conditions.
  • Track utility consumption data, prepare reports and circulate them for management review, propose/ implement corrective actions or solutions to control these costs.
  • Communicate and co-ordinate with the equipment suppliers to resolve plant equipment related issues.
  • Maintain satisfactory departmental targets for cost controls and downtime.
  • Create and implement preventive maintenance schedule in accordance with the equipment manufacturer’s recommendation/industry-accepted best practices for all company equipment.
  • Maintain close coordination with the production department to resolve equipment breakdowns and other production-related opportunities.
  • Maintain compliance with all safety, and health laws and regulations that affect the company operations.
  • Develop a competent maintenance team with a clear succession plan for all critical roles within the function.
  • Support the business through participation in problem-solving activities that lead to business innovations.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned by management.

Academic/Professional qualifications, work experience, knowledge & skills

Essential:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Industrial Engineering from a recognized University.
  • A minimum of 10 years' experience in a maintenance manager role preferably from a Beverage Industry.
  • Possession of a master's degree in any relevant field will be an added advantage.
  • Possession of Knowledge in SAP or any ERP system.
  • Valid Certified Maintenance Manager (CMM) certification will be a plus.
  • Possession of knowledge in boilers, welding, pipefitting, inside/outside machinist.
  • Solid understanding of technical aspects of plumbing, carpentry, electrical systems etc.
  • Working knowledge of facilities machines and equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering concepts, including electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience in planning maintenance operations and processes.

Other Attributes

  • At least 3 - 4 years hands-on in the Food Industry. Beverage manufacturing plant is a distinct advantage.
  • Familiar with Carbonated Soft Drinks and/or water treatment plant.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
